Antenna size and frequency are two major factors determining the range resolution and accuracy of radar sensors. Smaller antennas result in a larger radar azimuth angle; higher frequencies result in shorter wavelengths.
Stronger signals, less interference: With a smaller azimuth angle, strong signals can be focused more effectively, allowing detection of media with low dielectric constants, as high focusing enhances sensor reflection. High focusing also prevents the detection of devices such as agitators and jet cleaners, thus avoiding signal interference.
High-resolution and accurate level measurement, capable of measuring the entire tank height: For applications such as industrial level sensing, range accuracy (millimeter-level) is crucial. Measurement accuracy and range resolution (i.e., the precision with which changes in level are detected) depend on the transmission frequency. The wide bandwidth of the 77 to 81 GHz band makes range measurements highly accurate. Furthermore, high resolution helps distinguish the level from any interfering reflections from the tank bottom. This allows the sensor to accurately measure the level across the entire height of the tank, minimizing blind spots at the tank bottom. Because high resolution increases the minimum measurable distance, the level at the top of the tank can be measured even when the tank is full.
It maintains high accuracy and reliability even in harsh environments or complex process conditions.
Maintenance costs are low because there are no moving parts and the sensor does not come into contact with materials.
It is resistant to the effects of environmental factors such as high temperature, pressure, and humidity.
How It Works
A radar level sensor is a type of level sensor that uses radar technology to measure the level of liquids or solids in tanks or containers. It works by emitting a radar signal, which is reflected from the material surface and returns to the sensor. The sensor then calculates the level based on the signal's time-of-flight or frequency change. Radar level sensors are non-contact, meaning they do not come into contact with the material being measured, making them ideal for applications requiring extremely high accuracy and reliability. Even under complex conditions such as thin layers of foam or dust, these sensors can accurately measure liquid levels.

The 80 GHz radar level sensor uses Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) technology, where the sensor emits a high-frequency radar signal whose frequency increases in a linear fashion. The radar signal is reflected off the measured medium and returns to the same antenna. The frequency difference between the transmitted and received signals is directly proportional to the distance from the sensor to the material surface.
Using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method, the frequency difference signal is analyzed, and the reflected signal's spectrum is generated. From this spectrum, the level of the material is accurately calculated based on the time it takes for the radar wave to travel to the surface and back.
