Introduction

This side-mounted magnetic level gauge with full PTFE lining is engineered specifically for liquid level measurement in corrosive storage and process tanks. Built on the communicating vessels principle with magnetic float coupling, it lines the entire wetted path - including the measuring chamber, float and process flanges - with premium PTFE on a 304/316L stainless steel base.

It solves the most common pain point of standard stainless steel level gauges: rapid pitting, corrosion and leakage when exposed to strong acids, alkalis, oxidizing agents and high-salinity media. The fully sealed metal chamber eliminates the rupture risk of glass sight glasses, while the external magnetic flapper display delivers clear level readings with no direct contact with process fluid.

It is widely used in chemical processing, wastewater treatment, metallurgy and pharmaceutical facilities where corrosion resistance is a core requirement. With standard flange connections and modular expandability, it can be deployed as a direct replacement for existing glass tube gauges, or integrated into new tank construction projects.

Features

1. Full Wetted-Path Corrosion Protection

Unlike low-cost units that only line the main chamber tube, this gauge applies PTFE lining to every surface that contacts the process medium: measuring chamber, internal float, process flanges and sealing gaskets. This eliminates galvanic corrosion and leak points at material transitions, ensuring consistent corrosion performance across the entire fluid contact path.

  • Base chamber options: 304 stainless steel lined PTFE / 316L stainless steel lined PTFE
  • Float options: PTFE-coated 304SS, 316L or titanium for extreme corrosion scenarios
  • Compatible with most strong acids, caustic solutions, oxidizers and brine media
  • Operating temperature range: -40°C to +150°C, working pressure up to 20 bar

2. Clear, Reliable Level Visualization

The high-contrast red/white magnetic flapper display provides unambiguous level indication that remains legible from 15–20 meters away, even in direct sunlight or dim plant lighting.

Because measurement relies on buoyancy and magnetic coupling rather than optical or radar signals, readings are completely unaffected by foam, vapor, steam or surface turbulence inside the tank. This makes it far more dependable than glass sight glasses or non-contact sensors in fouling, condensing corrosive applications.

3. Simple Side-Mount Installation & Minimal Maintenance

The gauge mounts vertically to the side of the tank via standard process flanges, matching common DN20–DN50 PN16 or 3/4"–2" 150# mounting dimensions. For retrofit projects, it can be sized as a direct drop-in replacement for existing glass tube level gauges with no tank modification required.

With no glass to clean, polish or replace, and no exposed seals along the display section, routine maintenance is limited to an occasional chamber flush via the bottom drain valve. Properly specified for the application, it delivers 8–12 years of reliable service with no major replacement parts.

4. Modular Expandability for Automated Monitoring

The gauge supports full field retrofitting of additional functions without tank draining or process shutdown. All accessories mount externally to the chamber wall:

  • 4–20mA HART remote level transmitters for SCADA system integration
  • High/low level alarm switches and limit switches for process interlocks
  • Optional stainless steel or aluminum measuring scale for direct level reading

This allows facilities to start with basic local indication and scale up to automated monitoring as operational needs evolve, without replacing the entire gauge assembly.

5. Inherent Safety for Corrosive & Hazardous Service

The fully sealed metal pressure chamber contains all process fluid, eliminating the breakage and leakage risk inherent to glass sight gauges - a critical safety upgrade for tanks holding toxic or corrosive media.

The basic visual display is fully mechanical with no electrical components or wiring required. This gives it inherent ignition safety for hazardous area installations, as there are no spark risks from the indication system itself.

FAQ

All questions below are compiled from real inquiries from chemical plant engineers and procurement teams, targeting the most common doubts about PTFE-lined side mount magnetic level gauges in corrosive service.

Q1 What corrosive media is this PTFE lined side mount magnetic level gauge suitable for?

This gauge is designed for strongly corrosive liquid storage and process tanks. It is compatible with most strong acids, caustic solutions, oxidizing agents and high-chloride media, including hydrochloric acid, sodium hypochlorite, caustic soda, dilute sulfuric acid, brine and most organic solvents. It is not recommended for molten alkali metals or media with operating temperatures continuously above 150°C, as these conditions will exceed the thermal limit of PTFE lining.

Q2 Will the PTFE lining peel off or delaminate from the steel chamber over time?

With high-temperature compression molding and sintering process applied to the full wetted path, the PTFE lining bonds tightly to the 304/316L stainless steel base. Under normal operating conditions within -40°C to +150°C and without severe thermal shock, the lining will not blister, peel or delaminate. For long-term reliable service, avoid sudden extreme temperature swings and mechanical impact from hard objects during maintenance.

Q3 Can this side mount PTFE magnetic gauge replace my existing glass tube level gauge directly?

In most cases, yes. This gauge uses standard DN20–DN50 PN16 flange connections, which match the mounting dimensions of most conventional glass tube level gauges. We can also customize the center-to-center distance to match your existing installation hole spacing. It is a direct drop-in replacement with no tank modification required, making it a cost-effective safety upgrade for corrosive service tanks.

Q4 What is the maximum temperature and pressure rating for PTFE lined magnetic level gauges?

For this side-mounted PTFE lined model, the continuous operating temperature range is -40°C to +150°C, and the maximum working pressure is 20 bar. Unlike all-stainless steel magnetic gauges that can handle higher temperatures, PTFE lining will soften and lose dimensional stability above 150°C, so it is not suitable for high-temperature process vessels beyond this limit.

Q5 PTFE lined vs 316L stainless steel magnetic level gauge: which should I choose?

Choose 316L stainless steel if you work with mildly corrosive media, require higher pressure/temperature ratings, or have heavy solids and scouring conditions. Choose PTFE lined construction if you handle strong acids, alkalis or high-chloride media that would cause pitting corrosion on 316L. In most strong corrosion scenarios, a PTFE lined gauge delivers far longer service life at a much lower cost than exotic alloy gauges like Hastelloy.

Q6 What is the minimum liquid density for the PTFE coated float?

The standard PTFE coated cylindrical float is designed for a minimum medium density of 0.7 kg/dm³. For lower-density liquids such as light solvents and liquefied gases, we can supply custom low-density floats. Please provide your exact medium density and operating conditions when placing an inquiry, and we will size the float accordingly.

Q7 Does this PTFE magnetic level gauge have PED certification for EU market use?

Yes. This model is certified by ECM, an EU Notified Body, in compliance with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED). The certification covers the pressure boundary design, material quality and manufacturing process of the measuring chamber. A copy of the certificate can be provided with your shipment for customs and site acceptance inspection.

Q8 Does the gauge need calibration after installation, and how is it maintained?

No on-site calibration is required after proper installation. Since the measurement relies on buoyancy and magnetic coupling, the reading is inherently accurate as long as the float moves freely. For routine maintenance, simply flush the chamber via the bottom drain valve once every 6–12 months to remove settled sediment. Avoid scraping the inner lining with hard tools during cleaning to prevent damage to the PTFE layer.

Q9 Can I add a 4-20mA transmitter or level alarm switches later?

Yes. The gauge features a fully modular design. 4-20mA level transmitters, high/low level alarm switches and limit switches can be clamped onto the outside of the chamber at any time, with no need to drain the tank or shut down the process. This allows you to start with basic local indication and upgrade to automated SCADA monitoring as your operational needs evolve.
